Proud Heritage

The story of my ancestors emigrating from England to a New World is full of hope but also unknown peril. The Petworth Emigration Scheme is a hidden gem of UK history spanning two continents.

Historical Fiction

Based on True Events and Real People

The Petworth Project is a captivating blend of historical truths and fictional narratives that transport you back to the Old New World of 1832.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Petworth Project. The author truly brought history to life as we followed the Longhurst family in their struggles in England, their decision to seek a better life in the New World and their experiences in doing so. I was right there along the journey with them!.

This Scheme (1832 - 1837) provided relief for many who were impoverished during the uncertain times in England that were caused by the widespread Swing Riot uprising.

My  great, great, great, great grandfather and grandmother, who were part of the working class, benefited from this project. They set off for a New World which would forever change the trajectory of their offspring

Unfortunately, not all my ancestors survived the crossing of a turbulent sea. Some who did arrived at the port city of Little York and stayed at the Montgomery Inn which still stands today as a museum. A preserved letter dated from 1832, written by my ancestor from that very Inn, is on display there today.

I was born in rural Ontario, Canada and immigrated to the United States in 1995. Since retiring in April of 2022, my husband and I enjoy spending time with our children and grandchildren. We are also Pickleball enthusiasts.

I spent the first two years of retirement researching and writing The Petworth Project. The research findings kindled a passion to fictionize this story of what it may have been like to journey from England across a turbulent sea to a New World of promise and peril.
